There are many concerns for the Great Barrier Reef but the main concerns are that the Great Barrier Reef Marine park authority (GBRMPA) is trying to save marine animals that are threatened or a risk. But with the help from GBRMPA they are trying to identify the threatened species and then come up with a way of protecting these marine animals.
Species in the Great Barrier Reef are classified as Threatened, Iconic or at risk.
Species are threatened if the specie and its population has declined over the Reef at the same time.
Species are Iconic if one of Australia’s famous animals or plants need special attention or treatment.
Species are at risk if it is in a lot of pressure due to all of the human activity within the Great Barrier Reef.
Some of the threatened species in the Great Barrier Reef are:
· Sea Shells- e.g. helmet shells, triton shells, tridacnid shells
· Some fishes- e.g. seahorses, pipefish, potato cod, Barramundis cod, sea dragons
· A few Sharks – e.g. Whale Shark, Great white shark, Grey nurse shark
· Sea snakes
· Crocodiles
· Marine turtles
· Birds
· Seals
· Whales
· Dolphins
· Dugongs
