Management Issues
Management issues are a way that a group or someone manages or helps an issue that needs to be solved. These issues are mainly solved by the Great Barrier Marine Park Authority.
Some of the management issues that are brought in the Great Barrier Reef are as followed:
Climate Change
Climate Change has been a big issue on the Great Barrier Reef. Due to this the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Department of Climate Change created a plan called the Great Barrier Reef Climate Change Action Plan. This plan cost over $8.9 million, with a 5 year allocation under the Council of Australian Government.
This plan outlines and is designed to develop and test strategies to minimize the harm of Climate Change on the Great Barrier Reef. This action is based on the knowledge in Climate Change and the Great Barrier Reef: A Vulnerability Assessment. The Action plan is organized around these four things:
1. Targeted science
2. A resilient Great Barrier Reef ecosystem
3. Adaptation of industries and regional communities
4. Reduced climate footprints
Coral Bleaching
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has introduced a Coral Bleaching Response Plan; this is due to the increase of Coral Bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef. Some of the key objectives of the plan are the following:
1. Improve the ability and predict Coral Bleaching
2. Provide early warnings of bleaching
3. Measure the extent of the bleaching
4. Access the ecological impacts of bleaching
5. Monitoring the health of the Reef
6. Raise awareness about Coral Bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef
7. Evaluate the bleaching events for strategies
There are three main components of the Coral Bleaching Response Plan they are:
1. Early warning system- Climate monitoring, Sea temperature monitoring, Bleach watch
2. Assessment and monitoring- Broad-scale synoptic surveys, Intensive in-water surveys
3. Communication- Website and email updates, Briefings, Media releases
